Lavender Windows

$90.00

Our delicate “Lavender Windows” artwork represents the endless lattice windows that peep into the goings-on of the Royal Courts of the palaces and forts of Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Udaipur. These intricate windows were intended to conceal the ladies of the court observing daily happenings on the streets and while watching the courtyard festivities partaken by the Emperors, Kings and Princes in the evenings. The “Hawa Mahal” or “Palace of Wind” of Jaipur, built in 1799, is one of the inspirations for our artwork. It is famous for its 935 lattice-worked windows on its breathtaking orange facade. We superimposed soothing lavender, a color less associated with Indian design, onto the regal windows and enveloped the book with a delicate lace-like pattern. The artwork is accented by a playful flower inspired by the majestic magnolia plant. Magnolia, a hybrid plant, was initially bred by the Frenchman Etienne Soulange-Bodin. In India it is found in hill stations, Srinagar Valley and in Kalimpong in the Eastern Himalayas.
