The regal elephant or “haathi” is a symbol of loyalty, strength and abundance, while also granting longevity and good fortune. In Hindu and Buddhist mythology elephants are seen to possess perfect wisdom and destroy both physical and spiritual obstacles; the animals also reflect power and kings and Mughal emperors used them in regional wars over many centuries. The rare white elephant represents Lord Indra, the rain god associated with fertility. Indra rides the celestial white elephant by the name of Airavat. As Indra’s vehicle, Airavat represents the creation and motion of clouds in the sky. Interestingly, the body shape and size of the “haathi” is seen to resemble a fluffy cloud. Deep in the Thar Desert in the historic north west state of Rajasthan, is the Blue City of Jodhpur. Most of its architecture - palaces, havelis, churches, mosques and temples - is built in a glorious shade of blue.

Our Elephant of Jodhpur artwork brings together this revered and beloved giant in full ceremonial regalia in the triumphant and cooling colors of beautiful Jodhpur; its brolly beckoning the much desired summer monsoons.
