About

We are a historic single estate Charleston Gold Rice producer in Georgetown, South Carolina which means we’re fortunate to be very hands-on in the process of bringing Charleston Gold and Santee Gold Rices from our fields to your family table.

People often remark that our rice smells as good as it tastes. From the moment you open the bag, the aroma is unlike any rice you’ve ever tasted. It’s not only the unique Charleston Gold Rice seed - a variety developed with natural cross pollination of Carolina Gold Rice and aromatic varieties - but it’s also our land that imparts a flavor profile unlike any other rice you’ve ever tasted. Unlike modern rice that is often grown in sandy clay and harvested from multiple growers, we grow our own rice in our farm’s peaty fields that are mineral and nutrient rich. We’re close enough to the ocean to naturally flood our fields by the motion of the tides, yet far enough inland to receive natural freshwater river irrigation, which makes for delicious rice and a more sustainable farming method. We also use traditional rotational crop methods as part of our land stewardship program.

Founding Story

Welcome to White House Farms located in the heart of the historic rice-belt region of Georgetown County, South Carolina. When my family took over the stewardship of White House Farms in 2011, we were drawn to the rich history of the land. Starting in the 18th century, the peaty, muddy tidal fields here have produced rice that is uniquely flavorful and redolent of the Lowcountry terroir. Although these rice fields endured more than two centuries of wars, hurricanes, even the Great Depression, insurmountable hurdles eventually ceased rice production at White House – until now.

We feel honored to reignite the rice-growing tradition here and to be one of the largest single estate growers of Charleston Gold Rice. Charleston Gold is a superior variety developed from Carolina Gold - the heirloom variety that made Georgetown County one of the world’s largest and most renowned rice growing areas. In 2022, we had the unique opportunity to introduce a new natural cross variety of Carolina Gold - Santee Gold named for the delta that helped make us America's premier rice-producing region.

While honoring the tradition of growing this storied variety, we’re also honoring the legacy of our son and brother, Andy, who was passionate about this place, devoted to conservation, and loved the outdoors. A portion of each sale of Andy’s Charleston Gold Rice supports The Andy Quattlebaum and Blackwell Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity.
