Stream2Sea is a woman-owned, veteran-operated company that formulates and manufactures Reef-Safer™ sunscreens and body care products. Its high-performance, broad-spectrum mineral sunscreens for the face and body are the only sunscreens that have been tested and proven safe for vulnerable coral larvae.


Stream2Sea has earned multiple third-party endorsements including EWG Verified from the Environmental Working Group, Biobased Certified from the USDA, and the Protect Land + Sea certification from the Haereticus Environmental Lab, the organization that first identified petrochemical sunscreens as toxic to coral reefs. Stream2Sea has also partnered with organizations like 4Ocean to launch solutions that safeguard our oceans.

Founding Story

Stream2Sea was founded in 2015 in rural central Florida when Autumn Blum saw an oil slick coming off a group of snorkelers in Palau. An award-winning cosmetic chemist, she realized that the products we put on our bodies could be highly toxic to our fragile aquatic ecosystem so she decided to do something about it.

Fast-forward nine years, and Stream2Sea is still the only mineral-based sunscreen on the planet that's been tested and proven safe for freshwater fish, saltwater fish, and coral larvae. Even so, it uses the term Reef-Safer™ to describe its formulations. It's not just semantics, Blum notes. It reflects the company's ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of marine ecosystems through rigorous testing, transparency and continual improvement.

Of course, that focus on protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems extends to human beings. Petrochemical sunscreens, including but not limited to oxybenzone, carry inherent dangers particularly when used daily over many years.

Autumn Blum

Cosmetic Chemist & CEO

Autumn Blum is a visionary, entrepreneur, cosmetic chemist, and ocean advocate and the formulator and CEO of Stream2Sea, a company setting the new standard for sustainable, safe body care products and sunscreen. She holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry with a minor in Environmental Geology from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. As a cosmetic chemist, herbalist and entrepreneur for over 24 years, Autumn sold her first start-up in 2009 to the publicly-traded Nutraceutical Corporation.  She has dedicated her career to creating natural and effective plant-based formulas safe for humans, marine life and the planet.  

Her formulations have won multiple awards including Best of Natural Beauty from Better Nutrition, Best of Show from Natural Products Expo, Delicious Living’s Beauty & Body and Taste for Life Essentials. A triple-bottom-line may be a relatively new business term, but it’s been a lifelong passion for Autumn. Formulating products that contribute first to people and the planet and then to profit has been her goal throughout her entire career.  

Autumn is an active member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and the American Botanical Council and is a founding member of the Safe Sunscreen Council, a coalition of environmentally conscious companies with a mission to study the issue and raise awareness about the impact of sunscreen ingredients on the planet. Growing up in Sarasota, Florida, Autumn has always been passionate about the outdoors.  She became a certified scuba diver at 14 years old, and spent her youth diving, backpacking the Appalachian Trail and kayaking the Peace River. Recently inducted to the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame, Autumn is also a technical diver, shark advocate, underwater photographer and master scuba instructor.

Mike was raised in Hawaii, mostly in the water. Now living in Idaho with his family, Mike enjoys any and all outdoor activities. He came out of retirement to join the Stream2Sea team. After spending … years recovering from environmental toxicities, Mike is passionate about protecting the ocean and marine life from unsafe personal care ingredients.

John Nussbaum

President of Operations

John was retired from a life as a helicopter pilot and military diver when he met Autumn on a dive boat in Key Largo. John and Autumn were diving in Palau together when they noticed the fateful sunscreen oil slick coming off a group of snorkelers and have been together since. Passionate about protecting our waters, he has helped scale our operations, from setting up Autumn’s lab in the barn, to streamlining 2000-pound batches and high-speed tube filling in our FDA regulated facility. When not in production, you can often find John hanging out with his chickens and dogs or having fun on a dive boat anywhere in the world.

Faith has been involved in the Natural Products Industry for the past 20+ years as she believes in taking care of ourselves and the environment. When she is not working you can find her swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, snorkeling with the manatees, or floating on the water. It is her true happy place!
