AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Still Austin Whiskey Co., the first true grain-to-glass distillery to open in Austin, Texas since the end of Prohibition, today announced that the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) awarded its Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey with a Double Gold medal for the second year in a row, and its Straight Rye Whiskey (“The Artist”) with a first Double Gold medal. With these new recognitions, all three of Still Austin’s flagship whiskeys—Straight Bourbon, Straight Rye, and Cask Strength—are now Double Gold medal winners and signals to whiskey enthusiasts worldwide that Texas whiskey is on the rise.
“Double Gold medals awarded by the San Francisco World Spirits Competition are among the most coveted accolades in the world of spirits,” said Brandon Joldersma, chief operating officer at Still Austin. “They are the industry’s most reputed awards and provide a comprehensive picture of what quality whiskey should taste like. It’s why we’re proud to say all three of Still Austin’s flagship whiskeys have now been awarded Double Gold medals from their judges.”
The Art of Texas Whiskey:
Still Austin makes 100% of its whiskey in-house from grain to glass. It uses only Texas-grown grains and distill all its whiskey in Austin where it's learned to harness the fluctuating central Texas weather patterns to age its whiskey to perfection. The result is a delicious, high-quality work of art.
The artwork on the labels, created by internationally acclaimed artist and native Texan Marc Burckhardt, is a series of “archetypical” Austinites (e.g. “The Musician,” “The Artist,” “The Naturalist”). Each provides a sense of the people who have influenced and inspired the team, while paying homage to the Texas terroir.
The Cask Strength is bottled at 118 proof (59% ABV), and offers a nose of brandied cherries, muddled mint, and cinnamon toast; while the palate presents notes of grilled peaches, butterscotch pecan pie and dark brown sugar. This expression is a deeper, darker, more robust version of its fruit-forward sibling (“The Musician”), which is also a Double Gold winner. The Straight Rye is bottled at 99.6 proof (49.8% ABV), and presents a palate of chocolate, apricot, sandalwood, ginger, and caramel. The nose offers notes of honey, cherries, figs, cloves, and coffee.
The distilling team is led by Head Distiller John Schrepel, who works closely with Master Blender Nancy ‘The Nose’ Fraley to carefully test their barrels and select the most complex and primed ones to be bottled. Still Austin’s 42-foot custom-made column, “Nancy,” gives the team an exclusive opportunity to create unique new flavors and spirits.
