AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Still Austin Whiskey Co., the first true grain-to-glass distillery to open in Austin, Texas since the end of Prohibition, announces its limited-release seasonal Bottled in Bond series, four federally regulated whiskies that meet the criteria of the 1897 Bottled-In-Bond Act for spirits aged at least four years and bottled exactly at 100 proof. The first expression in this series is a Red Corn Bourbon (MSRP $79.99) and is inspired by the heat of the Texas summer, offering creamsicle and black tea scents, followed by a palate of peppermint and marzipan. It is available now at www.reservebar.com and www.stillaustin.com.
The next expressions will include a High Rye Bourbon in the fall, a Blue Corn Bourbon in the winter, and a Straight Rye Whiskey in the spring of 2024—each distilled to capture the ingredients, flavors and themes of the season from which they were inspired. Each of the expressions are produced and sold in limited quantities, and only in the season of their release.
The Red Corn Bourbon for the summer 2023 release is emblematic of Texas summers and represented by the heat-loving snake and cactus. This expression combines the robust nuttiness of Jimmy Red corn, with the sweet spice of rye. The result is a summertime bourbon offering creamsicle and black tea scents, followed by a palate of peppermint and marzipan. For Still Austin’s Bottled in Bond releases, each expression is made with 100% Texas-grown grains and utilizes a six-month slow water reduction process, which brings out more "mature" notes like vanilla and caramel.
“The launch of this series represents a new chapter in Still Austin's legacy, highlighting our dedication to craftsmanship and the vibrant agricultural landscape and communities that surround us in Austin,” said Mike Spadier, chief marketing officer at Still Austin. “The choice to create a whiskey for each of the four seasons embodies our commitment to capturing the essence of nature's bounty. Each bottle in this series is a testament to the artistry and care that goes into every drop of Still Austin whiskey, reflecting the unique character and flavors that define each season.”
Bottled in Bond spirits date back to 1897 when the Bottled-in-Bond Act was introduced. The federal regulations dictate that a spirit with this label adhere to the U.S.’s Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits to authenticate the whiskey in the bottle. Spirits with the Bottled in Bond label must be made by one distiller at a single distillery in one season, then aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse and bottled exactly at 100 proof / 50% ABV.
The artwork on the labels, created by world renowned artist and native Texan Marc Burckhardt, draws influence from the animals and the seasons while paying homage to the Texas terroir.
"My work revolves around myth and symbolism, often utilizing animals to drive the narrative,” Burckhardt said. “The paintings tell the story behind these unique whiskies, relating seasons, flavors, and characters with the experience of these spirits. Always a pleasure working with Still—responding to one art with another!"
The first of Still Austin’s Bottled in Bond series, Red Corn Bourbon, is available for purchase online via Reserve Bar and at www.stillaustin.com, along with its four flagship expressions.
