Since 2010, female-owned and Marin County, CA-based rockflowerpaper has been dedicated to creating beautifully designed, affordable products with a strong commitment to sustainability and empowering the global communities behind them. All of our products are designed in-house, and we partner with ethical manufacturers worldwide, forging lasting relationships that bring our unique fashion, accessories, and home decor to life with exceptional craftsmanship and thoughtful design. With a robust wholesale presence in over 3,000 retail stores across the U.S. and a growing e-commerce platform, we make our products accessible to customers everywhere. Driven by a mission to reduce ocean waste, our blu Collection features eco-friendly products that promote a more sustainable lifestyle. In partnership with Ocean Conservancy, rockflowerpaper has donated over $250,000 to support ocean conservation efforts, helping protect the planet for future generations with every purchase.
Founding Story
In 2008, amid the economic downturn, Brown University graduate Katie Smith leveraged her successful experience with her first company, Mulberry Neckwear, to found rockflowerpaper, a brand dedicated to creating beautifully designed, affordable products for women. Despite the challenging market, she partnered with Katie Blanchard, former VP of Design at Mulberry, and together they officially launched the brand in 2010. The duo traveled extensively, forming strong partnerships with ethical suppliers across China, Vietnam, Korea, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, Madagascar, Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey. Their resilient business model, focused on building a robust international network of suppliers and a vibrant in-house design culture, enabled them to thrive even in tough economic times.
Rockflowerpaper's product line, which includes fashion, accessories and home decor, is crafted with an emphasis on quality and aesthetics. Key to their business ethos, many of their factory owners are women and fellow entrepreneurs, and these relationships have been a cornerstone of their business.
During a business trip to Vietnam, Katie and her team were inspired to take action against ocean pollution after witnessing large amounts of plastic waste on Phu Quoc Island’s beaches. This experience inspired the creation of the blu Collection, featuring products that promote a sustainable lifestyle through their functionality or the use of recycled materials. The blu Collection has become the company’s fastest-growing division.
To further their environmental mission, rockflowerpaper partnered with Ocean Conservancy and their mission to protect the ocean from today's greatest biggest global challenges, pledging a donation for every blu Collection item sold. To date, the company has donated over $250,000 to support their efforts.

Katie Smith, a Brown University graduate, had a clear vision after earning her International Relations degree: to explore the world, use her academic knowledge, create beautiful products, and take control of her destiny. These passions set the stage for a journey that would lead her to create two successful companies.
Katie’s post-college years started with a unique opportunity to work with one of her closest friends, Katha Diddel, who had studied Mandarin and moved to Hong Kong. With China opening to the West in 1979, Katha began sourcing products from China for American markets and later founded her own wholesale home décor company. Katie managed sales and operations from San Francisco, while Katha oversaw design and supplier relations from Hong Kong.
After three years, Katie felt the pull to create something of her own. Recognizing a growing trend in necktie fashion, she founded Mulberry Neckwear, a company that quickly grew into a $50 million enterprise. Mulberry became a household name with iconic lines, such as the J. Garcia, Grateful Dead and Fillmore Poster Ties, as well as more classic collections like Claiborne and Kenneth Cole. After 20 years of success, Mulberry became the third-largest tie company in the U.S., which led to its eventual sale to Van Heusen in 2008.
Following the sale, Katie sought her next entrepreneurial challenge. In 2010, inspired by a passion for design and empowered by her global experiences, she launched rockflowerpaper, a wholesale brand that blended beautiful aesthetics with accessible prices for women’s products. Katie reunited with Katie Blanchard, the former VP of Design at Mulberry, who brought her artistic expertise to the new venture as President. Together, they focused on building an international network of suppliers while fostering a vibrant in-house design culture.
President and Creative Director Katie Blanchard is the creative visionary mind behind rockflowerpaper, shaping the brand’s distinctive designs and captivating products since its launch in 2010. From the beginning, Katie has been the driving force, infusing creativity and originality into every aspect of the brand.
Her creative journey began early when she won a statewide art competition, which earned her a scholarship to the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design. Graduating with a BFA in 1994, Katie was set on a path of artistic excellence. She began her career as a textile designer at Mulberry, a leading neckwear manufacturer founded by rockflowerpaper Founder Katie Smith. With her exceptional design talent, Katie Blanchard quickly rose to become Vice President of Design, leading a team of 20+. When rockflowerpaper was born, Katie Smith knew she needed Katie Blanchard’s creative expertise to bring the brand’s vision to life, marking the start of an extraordinary journey.
Katie Blanchard has spent her entire career working alongside Katie Smith, forming a unique and lasting professional partnership. The two Katies complement each other perfectly: Katie Blanchard is the creative heart of the brand, blending artistry with sharp business instincts, while Katie Smith is the strategic business mind with a flair for creativity. Together, their synergy has been key to rockflowerpaper’s success.
A versatile and gifted designer, Katie Blanchard is renowned for her vibrant color schemes and dedication to crafting one-of-a-kind pieces. Under her leadership, rockflowerpaper has gained widespread recognition for its striking textiles, home décor, and fashion accessories. Beyond her design talent, Katie is deeply committed to sustainability, ensuring eco-friendly materials are integrated into the brand’s production processes and advocating for environmentally conscious consumer choices.
Outside of her work, Katie is also a talented painter, textile artist, and passionate gardener. She constantly pushes creative boundaries, inspiring her team to explore innovative materials and techniques, ensuring that every product leaves a lasting impression.
