At MOIRÉ, we believe that chocolate is more than just a treat; it's an experience. We meticulously source cacao from all over the world, highlighting the vast variety of incredible flavors that this magical fruit provides. The same level of care goes into sweetening our chocolate. Instead of utilizing refined sugars and chemical fillers typically found in chocolate, at MOIRÉ, our chocolate contains only three ingredients: Cacao beans, cocoa butter, and dates!
We have found that dates provide a nutritional boost while allowing the euphoric, mood-lifting qualities of the cacao to be fully enjoyed in a decadently gentle way as opposed to refined sugars that so often cause an energy spike and simultaneous harsh crash.
Our mission is to craft exquisite, date-sweetened, artisan chocolate that delights the senses paired with eye-catching, eco-friendly packaging designed to elevate the everyday moments of life. Our evolving collection of single origin bars are entirely organic and on top of all this, our dedication to sustainability, ethical sourcing, and impeccable craftsmanship sets us apart in the world of chocolate and ensures a deliciously smooth indulgence for all to enjoy.
Founding Story
A handful of years ago, artist and chef Julia Ziegler-Haynes was preparing for a camping trip when she noticed the temperature that night was going to turn punishingly cold. She envisioned her family and friends bundled up around the campfire and knew she wanted to bring along a tradition from her childhood—something to sip and stay warm before retreating to their tents and turning in for the night. Without giving too much thought to measurements, she threw together ingredients from the pantry: cacao powder, date sugar, and sea salt.
That night, under the stars, she stirred the cocoa in a big pot with milk taken from the campsite kitchen. It began to steam and turn thick and creamy. Not too sweet—just silky and rich. Everyone sat silently with their necks craned back, trying to capture the last drops from their mugs.
In the silence of deep satisfaction, Julia's fascination with cacao took root, and the inspiration for Moiré was born. As the world turned inward in 2020, she found herself at home, nurturing a young child and a fledgling chocolate business. She squirreled away spare minutes to dive deeper into the history of cacao and the impact of this magical fruit. She stayed up nights playing the zany alchemist, developing recipes and flavor combinations, the artist in her gleefully recognizing the blank canvases of chocolate before her.
During the day, Julia took turns between parenting and developing a business strategy for the world she wanted to live in: one infused with environmental feminism, ethical business practices, and transparent trade. In a dark, isolating, and divisive time, Moiré Chocolate became a source of joy and connection.

×Team Bios
Julia's expansive background began with studio art, and eventually transitioned to culinary pursuits. Most notably, cooking for some of New York Fashion Week's groundbreaking designer dinner presentations, and running an underground supper club in Brooklyn, which later inspired an unscripted cooking and traveling web series she hosted- The Dinner Bell - on VICE’s Munchies. Upon entering motherhood, Julia pushed pause on large-scale cooking and left Brooklyn for Los Angeles. In 2022, she decided to combine her sense of artistry and social justice and environmental roots to launch the artisan line of single-origin, date sweetened chocolate, MOIRÉ.
