About
Chikka Chikka is a new packaged digestive snack that is made primarily from toasted fennel seeds, sweetened with maple syrup. It is packaged in attractive pocket-sized tins, and promoted as a health supplement and an alternative to gum, mints, and snack foods. Chikka Chikka is a natural breath freshener that is also good for digestion, rich in antioxidants, an anti-inflammatory, good for dental health, and can lower blood pressure. It provides a variety of vitamins and minerals including magnesium and manganese, and is low-calorie, gluten-free, vegan, kosher, and halal. Fennel seeds have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to provide multiple health benefits.
Context
Most snack foods or breath fresheners like gums or mints provide empty calories with no nutritional benefit. Gums and mints have a high amount of sugar and artificial flavors. Gums are messy and sticky and require disposal. The existing saunf (toasted fennel seed) products in the US are only available in specialty Indian stores, are poorly branded and packaged in plastic bags, and contain a lot of sugar, artificial colors and flavors. There are no portable resealable packaged fennel seed products available in the US.
Chikka Chikka is a portable beautifully-designed reusable container of fennel seed mixes that is available as a point of purchase product in natural/specialty food stores and through holistic health practitioners and directly through our website. The seeds are roasted and sweetened with maple syrup, and contains no refined sugar, no artificial sweeteners or colors. In addition to POP placement, it can be placed in aisles adjacent to the Indian foods section or in the snack/nuts section or in the natural foods section. There are currently three varieties: cardamom (original), mint, and cinnamon. A major component of our unique selling point is the packaging, which are beautifully designed, reusable and resealable tin containers.
Founding Story
We loved eating Indian fennel seed mixes, but did not like that they were mostly filled with sugar and weird artificial flavors and colors. So we would roast our own mixes and carry some with us wherever we went. When our friends Molly and Joel tried some, they loved it and Molly immediately responded, 'this is so good, where do we buy this?' And from that moment, Chikka Chikka was born.
Much to our parents’ chagrin, we have defied what is expected of children of south Asian immigrants. We tried to stay on a straight path. We really did. We got advanced degrees. We got normal jobs. But then we got married in 2016 and collectively took a sharp left turn. Together. We were looking for a house, but then ‘accidentally’ bought an abandoned biker bar and transformed it into an award-winning and well-loved restaurant and community gathering place. We sold that business to an aspiring Michelin star chef, and now we think that anything is possible.
Guided by a gentle blend of delusion, love, laughter, and fondness for stuff from the old country, we have created Chikka Chikka. Because, why not.
