A good set of sheets can transform your bedroom, the quality of your sleep, and your overall mood as a result. But finding the right bed sheets for you isn’t always so straightforward, especially since people have vastly different preferences when it comes to the fabrics they sleep on, says Saana Baker, a textile expert and editor-in-chief at The Textile Eye.

Knowing your own tastes is the most important thing before you shop, Baker says. “You’re the one who’s going to be sleeping in these sheets,” she says. “Do you prefer percale or sateen? Do you like silky or crispy fabrics? All of these things are going to lead you to make a decision that you’ll be happy with.”

Luckily, finding accessible bed sheets in a range of weaves and fabrics—like eucalyptus, hemp, flannel, and more—is easier than ever, including at retailers like Target. To find the best bed sheets at Target, we tested several picks at our Des Moines, Iowa testing lab and at home. Each set of bed sheets was evaluated in five categories: quality, texture, durability, and breathability. We also consulted Baker for additional insight on what to look for in a set of sheets.

What We Tested

We evaluated several sets of bed sheets on Target based on their quality, texture, durability, and breathability. For more information on how we tested Target bed sheets, check out our testing process below.

Why You Should Get It
  • These cotton sheets have a high-end feel and fit our mattress very well.

Keep in Mind
  • The pillowcases can run a little small.

The overall best sheets at Target are also one of the least expensive we tried: At just $50 for a queen-size set, the Threshold Printed Performance Sheets wowed us with their soft, sturdy-feeling texture that’s especially inviting to snuggle up in at night.

These are medium weight, 100% cotton sheets, and we found the breathability was great. During testing, they kept us warm without making us feel smothered or overheated. The fit is also excellent, due in part to the deep 18-inch pocket. We appreciate the double rows of elastic on the fitted sheet, which helps keep it firmly in place.

The flat sheet also had plenty of extra fabric to tuck in along the sides. After making the bed, the sheets looked snug and smooth on the mattress.

Other than some slight color fading on the pattern, these Threshold sheets fared beautifully after going through the wash. There was minimal shrinking, and no pilling or wear and tear. The seams, elastic, and stitching remained in perfect condition.

We also liked that these sheets are available in a selection of nice solids and patterns. Plus, they’re available in every mattress size and have an OEKO-TEX certification.

How They Performed After Two Months

We washed these sheets every few weeks, and continued to be impressed by their texture and breathability. The crisp hand feel remained, even after regular use, and they proved nice and cooling on hot nights.

We didn’t notice any staining, loose threads, or imperfections develop during the longer-term testing period. They do wrinkle a little bit after coming out of the dryer, but not so much that it’s bothersome.

Key Terms to Know

  • Thread count: This refers to the number of threads on a sheet, usually cotton. Thread count isn’t everything when buying sheets (too-dense sheets may not be comfortable) but a higher value (200 or above) generally means that the sheets are better quality, Baker says.
  • Hand feel: Experts often use this term to describe how fabric feels when you touch it. For example, sheets might have a soft hand feel, a silky hand feel, or a rougher hand feel.
Why You Should Get It
  • These bamboo sheets are soft, cooling, and wrinkle-resistant.

Keep in Mind
  • They’re not offered in a twin size.

We think the Cariloha Retreat Bamboo Sheets are a particularly good investment for hot sleepers. During testing, these lovely bamboo sheets proved to be soft, comfortable, and very cooling.

Made of 100% bamboo lyocell with a sateen finish, these Cariloha sheets have a lovely hand feel and are quite comfortable to sleep on. As hot sleepers, we were impressed by the cool, silky-feeling fabric that prevented them from becoming overheated on warmer nights. These sheets fit great, too. The elastic band on the fitted sheet is secure and stays in place tightly.

After being washed, these sheets retained their luxurious look and feel and didn’t develop any visible wear and tear. Unlike many other sheets, they also don’t wrinkle easily, which is a nice plus.

Overall, we had few complaints about these luxe sheets. While the price is higher, the set does include a top sheet, which isn’t always the case even with more affordable sheet sets. But they’re only available in size queen and up (though it’s nice that you can get either a king, split king, or California king size, some of which are harder to find).

Why You Should Get It
  • These sateen sheets are heavy, drapey, and ultra silky soft.

Keep in Mind
  • The fitted sheet is not the deepest, and the sheets developed some rips after being abraded.

When it comes to quality, the California Design Den Cotton Sheets feel like luxury hotel sheets. The 100% cotton sateen weave is on the heavier side, with a higher thread count (600, which is above average), and the texture feels soft and silky.

These sheets are substantial-feeling and not at all see-through. After going through the wash, these sateen sheets managed to get even softer. Post-wash, the texture is a little more relaxed and slightly wrinkled, though not terribly so. We didn’t spot any imperfections and there was no color transfer.

We noted that the fitted sheet in this set is a little tight, so those with taller mattresses may struggle to make the bed. However, it remained in place nicely after tossing and turning.

The fabric on these sheets feels very cool and they performed well in tests for breathability. But it’s worth noting that these may not be the most durable sheets over time: When we rubbed the sheet with sandpaper, we did manage to rip it. Still, we think this set is well-priced and comfortable to sleep on. Plus, it’s available in a lovely range of colors, and beautifully designed.

How They Performed After One Month

We regularly laundered these sheets according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and they remained smooth with a nice hotel-luxury feel. And after frequent use, we found ourselves regularly waking up cozy and comfortable.

The texture hasn’t changed at all (in fact, they may have gotten even softer), there are no stains, the fabric feels temperature-regulating and breathable, and they have a stylish appearance. Our only criticism after one month of use was that it would be great if the pillow cases had envelope enclosures so the pillow wouldn’t be exposed.

Why You Should Get It
  • These 100% French linen sheets have a lovely texture and excellent breathability.

Keep in Mind
  • It might not be the best option for pet owners.

The sheets in the Bokser Home French Linen Sheet Set are made from 100% French linen and available in a gorgeous range of hues, like a deep baltic blue and putty heather. Like all linen sheets, these have a thicker, heavier, rougher feel that’s more raised than that of cotton sheets. If you appreciate a more textured, nubby-style sheet, you’ll adore these.

The fitted sheet in this set is a breeze to get on a mattress, and we especially appreciated the strong elastic as well as top, bottom, and side tags—this is a small detail, but it makes a huge difference when it comes to ease of making a bed. The fitted sheet rounded the corners of the mattress well and stayed in place throughout the night.

When we laid down on these sheets, we were surprised by how soft they felt to snuggle up in spite of the rougher hand feel. We didn’t observe any flaws, loose strings, imperfections, or color variance on these sheet whatsoevers, either before or after washing. And speaking of washing: Foundation and coffee stains came out of the sheets completely, though some residue from an oil stain lingered slightly.

These sheets don’t seem to have tons of air flow, though they did perform well in tests for breathability. The only real flaw is that they didn’t perform quite as well in abrasion tests for durability: Sandpaper visibly wore down the fabric after about 50 swipes.

The wear and tear from this test looked typical, but it’s something to keep in mind, especially if you’re someone with pets that may scratch at the fabric.

How They Performed After Six Months

These sheets have continued to soften up after a few months of use and remain cozy-feeling and breathable. Stains have come out easily and we haven’t noticed any issues with loose threads. The fitted sheet does appear slightly looser than when we first started testing it, though it hasn’t popped off the bed in the night. And there’s some minor color fading in the area we lay on the most.

Why You Should Get It
  • These eucalyptus sheets are lovely and cooling with a soft, silky hand feel.

Keep in Mind
  • Some of the silkiness faded after they went through the wash.

These Threshold 320 Thread Count Cool Tencel Lyocell Sheets are made from satin lyocell, a material Baker says tends to be higher-quality and more environmentally friendly when it comes to eucalyptus sheets. Plus, these sheets are Made in Green by OEKO-TEX and Forest Stewardship Council Certified, meaning they were manufactured in a way that’s not harmful for forests.

In addition to their eco-friendly credentials, though, we were impressed by the quality and lovely hand feel of these sheets. They’re silky, very soft, and made from cooling fabrics. As hot sleepers, we didn’t experience any overheating or clamminess, suggesting they’re perfect for summer nights or anyone who tends to run warm while they sleep.

Overall, we think the silkiness of the material makes these sheets look and feel more expensive than they are.The fitted sheet in this set slipped onto a mattress with ease and remained in place firmly, even after lots of tossing and turning. There’s a deep, 18-inch pocket, which is good news if you have a taller mattress.

We didn’t have any issues with the corners popping off during the night. The sheets also didn’t become overly wrinkly after going through the wash—a nice plus.

These eucalyptus sheets continued to look and feel beautiful during the course of the testing period. After going through the wash, though, it’s worth mentioning that the fabric did feel slightly less silky—a little more like cotton than sateen. But they remained soft and felt very durable, so we think the set is a great value overall.

Product Details: Sizes: Twin/extra long, full, queen, king, and California king | Pocket size: 18 inches | Material: Satin lyocell | Certifications: Made in green by OEKO-TEX, Forest Stewardship Council Certified

Why You Should Get It
  • The crisp fabric is lightweight and expensive-feeling.

Keep in Mind
  • They’re not the most stain-resistant.

If crisp sheets are your preference, you’ll love the Casaluna Washed Supima Percale Solid Sheet Set. These soft, lightweight sheets are almost stiff-feeling (think a high-quality button-down shirt) and feel very luxurious.

Overall, these sheets are beautifully made. We rubbed them with sandpaper for an abrasion test and were pleased that no fiber threads developed, indicating they’d have solid durability. They also performed well in tests for breathability—combined with how lightweight they are, the 100% washed Supima cotton sheets would be great for hot summer nights.

You should expect some wrinkles on these, though ironing can smooth the fabric out easily. Compared to some of the other best sheets at Target, these are also not the best when it comes to repelling stains. We spilled oil and foundation on the sheets, and some visible marks remained even after washing. The color also faded a little after rubbing the sheets with sandpaper.

How They Performed After Six Months

These soft, comfortable sheets retained their lovely texture over time. They didn’t shrink and continued to easily fit on a mattress, feel high-quality, and are nice and cool on warm nights. There are no loose threads or holes, and minimal wear and tear. Because they’re so soft and cooling, these are great summer sheets. Our only criticism we have is that they developed some stubborn sweat stains that unfortunately didn’t come out in the wash.

Product Details: Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king | Pocket size: 18 inches | Material: Supima cotton | Certifications: OEKO-TEX

Why You Should Get It
  • These sheets are soft and almost silky, a rare quality for hemp sheets.

Keep in Mind
  • The pocket size is a little shallower than average.

The Tuft & Needle Hemp Sheet Set combines some of the very best qualities of different types of sheets. Though they look like linen thanks to a nubby appearance, these 100% hemp sheets are soft and nearly silky.

Beautifully designed, these sheets had no imperfections out of the package. The color was consistent throughout (in addition to your basic cloud white, there are gorgeous dark blue and honeycomb shades), and you can see the visible weave typical of linen and hemp sheets. The fabric is cool to the touch—almost slick-feeling—and they have a heavier weight but still manage to feel airy and breathable.

After going through the wash, we noted that the unwashed pillowcase was a little slicker than the washed version. But post-wash, the fabric still felt soft, although a little more wrinkled (again, this is typical of linen and hemp sheets). Another plus: Stains fully came out in the wash.

These sheets are more expensive than many others on this list. But we were impressed by the quality and breathability, and appreciated the surprisingly soft texture. The only real downside is that they didn’t perform quite as well for durability. We rubbed the sheets with sandpaper, and it created a large fuzzball and tear in the fabric. Over time, these might not hold up as well as some other options on this list, particularly for people who have pets that sleep in their beds.

How They Performed After Six Months

These sheets remained soft and comfortable after six months of home use. They’ve been washed many times, but we haven’t noticed any shrinking or color fading (which is notable, since we tested the dark blue color). And while we wondered about their long-term durability in our initial testing period, the fabric hasn’t developed any thin spots, tears, or loose threads with time.

Product Details: Sizes: Full, queen, and king | Pocket size: 14 inches | Material: Hemp | Certifications: OEKO-TEX

Why You Should Get It
  • These hemp sheets are breathable, beautifully soft, and boast high-quality manufacturing.

Keep in Mind
  • They’re one of the most expensive picks on our list and may wrinkle more than others.

If choosing organic sheets is important to you, the Delilah Home Organic Hemp Bed Sheets are an excellent choice. Made of 100% organic hemp that’s GOTS-certified, these sheets are soft, breathable, and well worth the higher price tag.

At $400 for a queen-sized set, they’re one of the more expensive sheets on this list. However, we think the quality of these sheets is exceptional and justifies the higher price. There were no loose threads, snags, or flaws in the fabric whatsoever, and the material didn’t develop any color fading after going through the wash.

The hand feel is soft with a slightly nubby texture that feels lovely against your skin. Post-wash, the texture of these sheets felt a little bit softer, and we suspect they’d continue to soften up with time. The fitted sheet hugged the mattress tightly and didn’t pop up after frequent use.

These sheets are also highly breathable. We tested a drop of water on the fabric, and noted that it was fully absorbed within seconds, suggesting there’s excellent breathability.

There are virtually no flaws on these sheets, but it’s worth noting that they’re not available in a regular twin size and that the pocket depth is a little shallower than others (at 15 inches, it may not fit a super tall mattress).

Like linen, hemp sheets are prone to wrinkling, and we definitely found that to be the case with these Delilah Home hemp sheets, too. Some people appreciate the soft, casual look of a wrinkled sheet, but others may find it to be sloppy—if the latter describes you, these might not be the best sheets for you.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, the Threshold Printed Performance Sheet Set nabbed the spot of the overall best bed sheets at Target. We loved the soft hand feel and medium-weight density of these sheets, as well as their excellent breathability.

Our Testing Process

To find the best bed sheets at Target, we put several sets to the test at home. All of the sheets were washed according to the manufacturer’s care instructions prior to use, then inspected for any imperfections, such as pilling, snags, color fading, loose threads.

Next, we made the bed with the sheets and noted how well they fit on a mattress (for example, was there any excess fabric?), as well as how well the fitted sheet remained on each corner after tossing and turning. We also paid close attention to the texture of the sheets, in particular how each felt against the skin.

During the testing period, we observed whether the quality of the sheets remained consistent over time, observing whether there was any shrinking after they were washed and how the post-wash appearance compared to the original. We also noted whether we felt cool in the sheets on warmer nights, and if they seemed to reduce sweat and moisture. Finally, we considered the overall value of each set of sheets—whether we thought the price was justified for the product.

Finally, we then used a methodology to evaluate each set of sheets in four categories: quality, texture, durability, and breathability.

What to Know About Bed Sheets at Target

Pocket Size

Pocket size refers to the depth on a fitted sheet. It’s particularly important to check a sheet’s dimensions if you have a very tall mattress. For those, “you do want to make sure you get a deeper pocket,” says Baker, which will usually mean one that’s around 18 inches deep.

You can always tuck a deeper pocket on a mattress, but if you have a tall mattress and a too-shallow fitted sheet, your mattress may not be fully covered when you make the bed.

Material

The best bed sheets at Target are available in a variety of materials and weaves. Here, a few you’re most likely to come across while you shop:

  • Cotton: This is the most popular fiber, Baker says. “It’s breathable, it’s washable, and it lasts a long time,” she says. What’s more, it generally doesn’t pill, unless it’s a very short staple. Your best bet is to look for 100% cotton.
  • Percale: These sheets are made from plain weave cotton fiber. In general, they’re crisp with a soft hand feel—“think a crisp white shirt,” Baker says.
  • Linen: Compared to some other fabrics, “linen has more personality,” says Baker. It generally feels a little rougher and more textured, which some people love. But if you prefer a supersoft, silky sheet, linen may not be right for you.
  • Sateen: This is linen’s opposite. Sateen, which is a weave used on cotton sheets, “is silky, it’s drapey, it hangs really beautifully,” says Baker. “It catches the light and it’s kind of shimmery and can be a little bit more luxurious.”
  • Flannel: These are basically cotton sheets that are brushed to give them a soft finish that’s almost velvety. “They’re warm and cozy when you get into bed, and if you live in a cold environment that can be really nice,” Baker says.
  • Hemp: Linen and hemp fabrics are closely related. Like linen, hemp is a strong fiber that can be a little bit scratchy. But Baker notes that she’s seen incredible advances in hemp sheets over the past 10 years and many have a soft hand feel.
  • Eucalyptus: Sheets made from eucalyptus can be made from rayon or lyocell, Baker says. This fabric is very soft, breathable, and nice, but she recommends opting for eucalyptus sheets made from lyocell rather than rayon. “It’s a better-quality product and environmentally responsible,” she says.

Certifications

Bed sheets can have a number of special certifications that reflect the manufacturing process and materials.

  • OEKO-TEX: This certification confirms that a product is not made with several chemicals deemed harmful by the OEKO-TEX Institute.
  • GOTS: The Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS), is considered the gold standard for organic materials. If a product has this certification, that means it’s made with an organic manufacturing process and materials.
  • FSC: The Forest Stewardship Council Certified label means a product is made with materials from a responsibly managed forest that offers environmental, social, and economic benefits.

Care

Between uses, it’s important to always wash your bed sheets according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In general, it’s a good idea to wash sheets separate from other items like clothing, to use a gentle cycle with cool or lukewarm water.

Cotton and cotton-polyester blend sheets can likely use a mild detergent, but silk or linen sheets may need a specialized detergent (the care label will let you know).

Other Bed Sheets at Target We Tested

Casaluna Washed Hemp Sheet Set

Made of 100% hemp, the Casaluna Washed Hemp Sheet Set impressed us with its comfortable fabric and strong elastic on the fitted sheet. They scored very well for their texture, quality, and breathability. But the sandpaper made a visible hole in the sheet during the abrasion test, suggesting they may not be the most durable over time.

Beautyrest Oversized Flannel 100% Cotton 4 Piece Sheet Set

Flannel sheets are known for their brushed softness, but the Beautyrest Oversized Flannel 100% Cotton 4 Piece Sheet Set initially felt somewhat rough to us, though the fabric did soften up a little with time. Still, these sheets feel durable and aren’t overly hot at night, so they might still be worth investing in—you should just prepare for a wearing-in period.
